How To Prepare Your Puppy For Grooming

We’ve compiled some suggestions and guidance that you can use to make your puppy love going to the groomer. The following 5 procedures will prepare your dog for success when it’s time to visit your preferred salon since grooming is a crucial component of keeping a happy and healthy dog.

1. Have fun with your dog’s feet.

All dogs should have their nails cut frequently, however certain breeds will need more maintenance than others. Make it a practice to play with your dog’s paws to help them get used to having their nails cut and their paws cleaned! Pet your dog’s feet, check in between his toes, feel his paw pads, and examine his nails.

2. Regular Brushing

If you don’t like brushing your dog, we won’t like brushing it either. Your pet will also bite our brushes if it bites yours. You may be sure that we will be able to give our all when they come to visit if you train them to like being brushed and give them treats for excellent behavior while being groomed.

3. Sit

The “sit” command is essential since it allows us to calm down an enthusiastic puppy. Additionally, they must assume this stance while we trim their face. You’ll be glad you used positive reinforcement and incentives to train them to sit from an early age since they’ll remember it long into adulthood!

4. Holding face

The “face hold” is also crucial because it allows us to keep their faces still while we use sharp scissors to cut the area around their eyes. Start by providing them a reward and asking them to sit before attempting to teach them the “face hold.” After that, softly hold their hair by placing your palm under their chin. Give them a treat or some praise after they have been motionless for a few seconds. Repeat this activity until they can maintain eye contact for at least 30 seconds.

When they are comfortable with you holding their chin, praise them for remaining still by massaging their face, above their head, and between their eyes. Once you are able to hold their chin still for 30 seconds, you may go on to brushing their face while holding their chin while praising them for each additional second of success. Finally, position the object—which is posing as our scissors—along their nose, on the corner of their eye, and keep it there while holding under their chin with a pen or the back of your comb. every 5 to 10 seconds, switching sides. Increasing to 30 seconds while praising them for remaining still.

5. Drier

They will become accustomed to all the loud noises in the salon if you get them used to the sound of the hair dryer or vacuum cleaner. A threatening sound may be transformed into a delightful treat dispenser by dropping goodies on the floor and blowing them with a hair dryer.
