Can Dogs Eat Seafood? Everything You Need to Know
Can canines consume seafood? They can, yes! As long as fish is properly prepared, deboned, and deshelled, dogs may eat a variety of seafood, including salmon, trout, and even lobster.
We consulted Dr. Gary Richter, DVM, inventor of Ultimate Pet Nutrition and owner and medical director of Holistic Veterinary Care in Oakland, California, for guidance on how to incorporate seafood into your dog’s diet as well as information on canine seafood allergies.
Risks of Feeding Seafood to Your Dog
Can canines consume seafood? Despite the fact that dogs can eat seafood as a treat or combined with their usual meal, Dr. Richter offers some advice before giving your dog fish:
- Allergies to seafood can occur in dogs. Although unlikely, it is possible. Dogs that are allergic to seafood might have gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, diarrhea, or itchy skin. If you think your dog may be allergic to shellfish, go to the vet right away.
- A dangerous parasite may be present in raw fish. Before giving seafood to your dog, make sure it is properly cooked. Fish served raw, especially those belonging to the salmon family (such as trout and whitefish), may have parasites that are highly dangerous to dogs. It’s referred to as “salmon poisoning.” Lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, rapid breathing, and seizures are among the symptoms. If you think your dog may have salmon poisoning, take them to the veterinarian right once.
- Shells and bones might clog the digestive tract or provide a choking hazard. Fish bones and shells should be removed since even the smallest fragments might be harmful.
- Large fish portions might expose your dog to poisons and other pollutants. Traces of mercury and other pollutants are present in seafood. Dogs should only consume seafood in moderation and in small amounts, just like humans, to avoid any negative consequences.
Benefits of Seafood for Dogs
Is seafood healthy for canines? Yes! When included in a balanced diet for your dog, seafood may be a nutrient-rich supplement when given sparingly and in moderation.
It is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for your dog’s immune system, skin, and digestion.
In addition, seafood is a rich source of nutrients including zinc, iodine, selenium, magnesium, and potassium that are vital for a healthy body.
How to Feed Seafood to Your Dog
To establish the proper quantity size for your dog while serving seafood, you should always visit your veterinarian. Even a treat that is good for them, like seafood, should be part of your dog’s ideal, daily, balanced diet.
- Serve wild fish rather than farmed fish. Your dog will be healthier, according to Dr. Richter. (Plus, it’s better for your health!)
- Cooking seafood properly is essential. Never give raw fish to your dog. All of the seafood should be well cooked.
- As though you were going to consume the fish, deshell and debone it.
- Simply serve fish. Steer clear of using butter, salt, or other seasonings.
- Serve in moderation and in small portions. Feel free to add some lobster to your dog’s usual meal.
